Q and A with Adele Panayi

Service: Patents

Sectors:

Adele takes on our Q & A challenge.

Why did you become a Patent Secretary?

I followed in my Mum's footsteps who worked here for 40 years. I started as a temp in 1989 for 2 weeks.  Enjoyed it so much I’m still here 36 years later. I'm not far off equalling my Mum's long service record.

What attracted you to PWF?

It was a firm with a friendly team and a great Board of Directors who encouraged progression and listened to their staff.

What’s the best part of being a Patent Secretary?

We all work together for the good of the company (more importantly we all get on together!).  Within our teams we work to our strengths helping others where needed.  No matter what your position is in PWF we are all treated equally and respectfully.  Each and every person plays an important part in the success of the company.

What’s your top tip for anyone starting a career in IP?

Learn your job to the best you can.  Be interested in what you do and the learning will be easier.  Engage with your team and never be afraid to ask questions if you are unsure about something.  It is better to ask than get it wrong!

What’s your top tip for any new innovator/creator?

Find that niche in the market, the simple thing that makes everyday lift easier.

What’s your greatest professional achievement/most interesting case?

My greatest professional achievement was being lead for one of our largest clients (at the time).

Most interesting case (for me anyway) was seeing one of our clients on Dragons Den where all of the Dragons wanted in and even offered more than they were asking! I enjoyed doing the work to get their invention to grant.  More importantly I understood the invention!

What are your career ambitions?

My career ambition was to be the best I could be at my job.  I believe PWF enabled me to achieve this.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Don’t worry about what anyone else is doing or not doing.  As long as you are happy with what you are doing then that’s OK.

How do you keep busy when not at work?

I enjoy walking my dog, especially in the forest where it is lovely and quiet.  I have quite a large family, 3 children, 5 grandchildren so they keep me busy.

Who's the most famous person you've ever met?

Nigel Benn (the boxer).  I got a kiss on the cheek from him!
