Q and A with Hannah Harding

Service: Patents

Sectors:

Patent Administrator Hannah Harding joined us in 2022 and recently wrote for the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys' Journal. Find out more about Hannah.

Why did you become a Paralegal?

I had a bad case of terminal boredom in my previous jobs, and wanted a role where I would be challenged and kept interested. The statement made in my interview “We’re all science nerds who do a bit of law” did absolutely no harm, either.

What attracted you to PWF?

I had no prior experience in the industry and I wasn’t discounted because of that – PWF were very open to the reality of transferable skills and willingness to learn being a workable combination. On arrival, the really wholesome vibe of the Leeds office (we have an office jigsaw and do craft themed office socials – it’s very up my street!)

What’s the best part of being a Paralegal?

The truly varied nature of the role, and the level of responsibility and autonomy involved. Turns out that PRIOR terminal boredom was a symptom of not having enough of either!

What’s your top tip for anyone starting a career in IP?

I was told on my first day “It’s impossible to know or remember everything about this job”. Get comfortable with this truth – and make lots of detailed notes. When you see something for the first time in a year and don’t remember a thing about it, you’ll thank Past You for them!

What’s your greatest professional achievement?

Passing my CIPA exam, and breaking the score threshold I’d set myself (after many “just short” practice papers).. I did not go to university by choice, and have often found myself condescended and underestimated as a result. Having a recognised qualification in my chosen field meant a lot to me as a result – and beating the target I set myself was a nice additional reminder that I can achieve what I put my mind to no matter how often I’m underestimated.

What are your career ambitions?

Sitting the EPAC exam, and having greater involvement with CIPA in the future - aside from just learning everything I possibly can.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

My partner and I are competitive archers, and one of our wonderful coach’s favourites is “Focus on only the arrow you’re shooting – the previous one is gone, the next one isn’t here yet. You can’t do anything about them.” Whilst having mixed success applying this in my archery, it’s something I think about and attempt to bring to other aspects of life, by trying to only focus on what I can tangibly do in the moment, and worry less about things I can’t control.

How do you keep busy when not at work?

I think I gave the game away in the previous question. Besides that – powerlifting, hiking, being a huge Trekkie and keeping up the baking practice after being dubbed (very kindly!) the office Star Baker.

Who's the most famous person you've ever met?

One of my oldest friends managed to get us tickets to a convention for The Last Kingdom TV series a couple of years ago. There’s a photo of us both with actress Millie Brady who played Aethelflaed, complete with swords, shields and shouting about the glory of Wessex - as you do.
