Why did you become a Patent Paralegal?
I “fell” into the role. I was unsure what I wanted to do, so accepted a job as an Office Junior in an IP firm. I travelled around Thailand and Australia for a few months, but upon my return started to look for a job in IP, as I had relevant experience from my first job.
What attracted you to PWF?
The people! When I joined PWF in 2012 there were many big personalities, and I instantly felt welcomed and a part of the team. Everyone was very friendly and happy to help.
What’s the best part of being a Patent Paralegal?
Seeing new innovations long before they are released. If you don’t understand the technical side of the inventions, you can pick the Attorney’s brains to understand more.
What’s your top tip for anyone starting a career in IP?
Make sure you always have a note pad and pen. Taking notes is key to this job at the beginning. Although the patent process appears straightforward, in reality so much more goes on behind the scenes.
What’s your greatest professional achievement/most interesting case?
Recently I passed the CIPA Introductory Patent Paralegal course. It may seem small to some, but I haven’t taken any exams since being in college. I was very chuffed when I passed.
What are your career ambitions?
To sit the Advanced Patent Paralegal course. Since being in the Patent world, I’ve learnt that there’s always more to learn (and remember!).
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
“Never assume anything”
From the colleague who trained me when I started at PWF. As the months and years passed, I started to understand the advice. If I’m ever in doubt I check, check, and check again.
How do you keep busy when not at work?
I have two young children who keep me very busy when I’m not working. Taking them to clubs and parties – they seem to have a better social life than me!
And just for fun, what superpower would you most like to have, and why?
To predict the lottery numbers so I could travel the world – first class of course!
