Discover Daniel's route into the IP industry; how and why he became a Trade Mark Attorney, and his favourite parts of the job at PWF.
Why did you become a Trade Mark Attorney?
I completed my first degree in Chemistry but always had an eye on the law. In the summer of 2020, when something minor was affecting the global job market (the details escape me), I decided it was a good opportunity to do a Master's in IP Law. The original plan was probably to become a Patent Attorney, but I stumbled across trade marks along the way, realised it was a good fit, and have never looked back.
What attracted you to PWF?
The calibre of the work and the clients we act for, the people, and the chance to build a practice long-term. Plus, the chance to work alongside James Cornish and Taryn Byrne (who insisted this line be included).
What’s the best part of being a Trade Mark Attorney?
The variety of clients and the problem-solving involved. No two portfolios look the same. You get to work directly with brilliant people across every industry imaginable, and the occasional travel is a nice bonus!
What’s your top tip for anyone starting a career in IP?
Don't panic if your route isn't a straight line. A career is 40 years long. Like most areas of law, IP is a competitive field, so focus on building solid work experience wherever you can. Whilst doing my Master's, I worked in the Civil Service alongside applying for IP roles. Stay open-minded, and don’t be afraid to look sideways for other opportunities.
What’s your greatest professional achievement?
Winning the prize for the highest mark in the 2024 Trade Mark Attorney finals. It was a nice milestone after months of revision, though the overriding feeling was relief at never having to sit an exam again. Sadly, I am old news now.
What are your career ambitions?
To build long-term partnerships with clients and support their commercial ambitions. Keeping the focus on building their business rather than getting dragged into legal disputes (even if the occasional battle is unavoidable).
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
“Control the controllable”
How do you keep busy when not at work?
Usually split between the gym, coding, playing drums, and squeezing in the occasional round of golf when time permits (not all at once).
What’s the last item you bought on Amazon?
A pack of lightbulbs.
